    The Institute for Medicinal Plant Research “Dr. Josif Pančić” was founded in 1948 as the first institution of that kind in the Balkans. Up to date the Institute is the sole and unique institution that covers the research, production, processing and trade of medicinal plants and herbal products and dietary supplements, establishing a tradition of more than sixty five years.
    Institute’s activities are scientific research and development, production process and commercial activities, including two Institute’s own herbal pharmacies. Institutes products include syrups, capsules, herbal drops, teas, cosmetic preparations, oils, crèmes, honey based preparations etc.
    The issue of medicinal plants engages a significant number of M.Sc. and Ph.D. researchers in pharmaceutical, agricultural, chemical and biological sciences, as well as specialists and graduates of different expert backgrounds. Institute’s laboratories are equipped with modern analytical facilities for performing scientific researches and control of all the Institute’s products. Chemical analyses of herbal extracts are conducting by modern analytical techniques, and laboratory for microbiological control can perform isolation and identification of pathogenic microorganisms as well as assessment of antimicrobial activity.
    Agronomic investigations include introduction and domestication of autochthonous and allochthonous medicinal plants into culture, improvement of existing cultivation practice of medicinal crops, and ex situ germplasm conservation and population screening for desirable agronomic and chemical traits.
